Rudi Delanghe Raku Vase 1985

A rare Raku Stoneware Vase hand crafted by Rudi Delanghe, signed and dated 1985.

This striking piece of studio pottery comes from the hand of this Belgian artist of international renown and regarded by many as "the Raku Master", he has created this totally unique vase using the ancient technique of Raku that has been practiced in Japan since the 15th century.

Western style raku usually involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colours in glazes and clay bodies. The drastic thermal shock also produces fine crazing to the glaze. The original Japanese style of raku is an outgrowth from Buddhist influences in life and especially in the tea ceremony.

This lovely example stands 8” in height and is 9" across at its widest point, and with an open mouth 2.5" (6.5cm) across.

Hand formed into an elegant Amphora shape that would not have looked out of place two millennia ago and yet somehow manages to remain contemporary and timeless. With its subtle blending of Greys over a biscuit coloured base, Its ridged and rustic surface is both wonderfully tactile and pleasing to the eye.

A stunning and unique piece of sculptural artwork in itself that can be enjoyed with or without flowers, that would sit comfortably within any style of décor.

In beautiful undamaged condition, Artists signature and date to the underside.
